We’re 15!!

It’s been 15 years since we opened our doors, and what a phenomenal 15 years it has been!

Our practice has gone through many changes over the years, and right now we love what we do more than ever. We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to every one who has passed through, helped out and supported us since September 2007.

team photoTo celebrate 15 years amazing on Grey Street we want to give something back…

We’re giving 500 lucky customers the chance to get their hands on our special edition 15th anniversary cloths and collector’s cases.

All we ask for is a small donation to our chosen charity; Cardiomyopathy UK. This is a cause that has affected our team over the past year, and we would love to raise funds to help them with their incredible work.

Donations can be made on our Justgiving page, so all proceeds go directly to the charity:

https://justgiving.com/fundraising/greyst

We’re asking for a donation of £10 for a limited edition cloth or £40 for a cloth AND a case.
The case safely holds 4 frames, so it can be shared with family or kept all to yourself!

Please include your name when making your donation, and we’ll ensure your goodies are sent out to you!

We’d love to see your collector’s cases in action!

Please send us a pic of your collector’s case filled with Grey St. frames, so we can include you in our 15th anniversary collage.

Here’s some of ours to get you started…

Here’s to the next 15 years of Grey St. Optician!

Haffmans & Neumeister: Eyewear for Perfectionists

Introducing Haffmans & Neumeister: an independent eyewear company built on 20 years of pioneering design…

More than 20 years ago, Philipp Haffmans and his design partner invented a whole new way of manufacturing frames.
Unlike the conventional process of soldered and screwed metal parts, these new designs were cut from a single sheet of 0.5mm stainless steel. The steel was then formed into shape and assembled.
With this simple and ingenious idea, the pair revolutionized the eyewear world forever!

Over the years, these prototype designs were constantly developed and technically perfected until Haffmans & Neumeister was born.

Here on Grey St, we’re passionate about seeking out the latest and greatest in the world of eyewear, and bringing the very best back to the people of Newcastle. As we approach our 15th year we’re proud to be partnering with a collection as focussed on perfection as we are.

In 2016, after having previously established some of Berlin’s best-known eyewear brands, brothers Daniel and Philipp Haffmans and their long-time partner Jean-Pierre Neumeister, founded Haffmans & Neumeister.

Haffmans and Neumesiter’s aim is to apply their wealth of experience into developing products with technical solutions, surpassing industry standards.   Their streamline approach to design is centred around minimising unnecessary material wherever possible, while adding as little as 0.2mm of substance in other areas, to create a structural form that is perfectly balanced in both its wearability and durability.

While this may seem insignificant to some, it is this attention to tiny details that set apart Haffmans and Neumeister from their contemporaries.

As well as pioneering flat metal design, the brothers are also responsible for the first “screwless hinge” technology. This concept has since been replicated by eyewear manufacturers around the world.
For Haffmans and Neumeister, they have refined the process further, to produce something that is simultaneously half as complex but twice as effective.

Their eyewear is designed, developed, produced and distributed in-house at their headquarters in Berlin, using progressive technology and sustainable custom-developed practices.
They use recycled materials in many areas of production, such as in their eyeglass case made of leather residue.

Each pair of glasses is handmade with extreme precision and care, inspired by the concept of origami.

When in the right hands, a single sheet of paper can take on a structural quality through just a few simple folds. Following this principle, these stainless steel constructions are beautifully light, yet impeccably strong.

Their collection is comprised of three core families following a logical progression, inspired by typography:

Ultralight

The signature collection
The Ultralight Collection consists of refined forms, reduced silhouettes and minimized weight. Pure and simple, the stainless-steel skeletal design and rivet hinge is the foundation of
Haffmans & Neumeister’s exceptional elegance.

Ultralight Plus

Ultralight plus Acetate
Ultralight Plus takes the flat sheet design of the core collection, Ultralight, and adds Windsor rims to give another layer of color and dimension to some of the bestselling models.

Bold

Classic and innovative
Creating a more pronounced look, the Bold Collection further fleshes out the Ultralight structure. Utilizing distinct acetate frame fronts with coordinated temple tips to add bulk and presence.

Whether you like frames that are subtle or statement, there’s a frame for every perfectionist by Haffmans and Neumeister.

TUESDAY 31ST MAY: KUBORAUM

We introduced Kuboraum to Grey St in 2019, and their collections have continued to surprise us ever since.

These frames are “dreamed in Berlin” and combine avante garde shapes with unexpected textures and finishes. Kuboraum’s approach to design is entirely unique; it’s no surprise to learn that the brand’s founders first met in an art gallery!

If you’re ready to take your eyewear to the next level, Kuboraum’s collection is a must-see.

I’d like to see the Kuboraum collection!

WED 1ST JUNE: ANNE ET VALENTIN

As one of our most diverse collections, Anne et Valentin have been a favourite here on Grey Street for over a decade.

Designed and handmade in France, this collection spans the spectrum of design from the most delicate details through to the strongest silhouettes.

This collection is founded upon true love, as the eponymous couple behind the brand brought their skills in fashion and optometry together to create something everlasting.

A Legacy on Grey Street

It’s no secret that we’re proud of our prime position in Newcastle’s iconic Central Arcade!

Designed by Oswald and Son in 1905, and featuring a glass barrel-vaulted roof and stunning tile work, Central Arcade was and is still celebrated for its architecture and craftsmanship.

The arcade was opened in 1906 as an elegant shopping destination. Today it is home to some of the best local and independent businesses in the region.

Central Arcade remains a Newcastle institution, but our beautiful location is not the only legacy here at Grey St. Optician…

Introducing Masunaga 1905

Masunaga Optical was founded in Fukui, Japan in 1905.

97% of Japanese-made optical frames are manufactured in Fukui, making it one of the three largest production regions for optical frames in the world.

The company founder Gozaemon Masunaga brought in skilled Japanese craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo, with the ambition of establishing the optical industry  in Fukui.
Gozaemon created a guild-like system where fully-fledged craftsmen could set up their own businesses. Owing to this system, the number of eyeglass craftsmen increased gradually, and the optical industry spread all over Fukui.

Masunaga are the only Eyewear Manufacturer in Japan that handles each step in a 200 step production process, from raw materials to the finished product. This integrated production system guarantees the highest level of detail and quality.

Masunaga’s collection has something for everyone. From delicate colours and intricate details, to powerful acetates and seven-barrel hinges. The defining characteristic of Masunaga Optical is in the quality itself. The frames are expertly engineered to achieve the highest level of comfort, and enduring style.

We’re honoured to have been trusted to bring this iconic brand to Newcastle upon Tyne. We think they look perfectly at home against the stunning backdrop of the Central Arcade!

The latest collection from Masunaga has just landed. To get your hands on a piece of eyewear history, get in touch now.

Sad news

We have taken the unusual decision to close on Wednesday 29th December. A couple of our team have lost close family and we will also be paying respects to a Grey St. legend many of you will be familiar with. Mark has been brightening up our store since 2008 and will be fondly remembered.

Meet Nadia, the newest member of our team.

Nadia

Nadia came to Grey St. looking for a pair of glasses. We loved her so much we asked her to stick around!

Originally from Scotland, she has lived and worked all over the world, including a stint in an Optician down under.

We’re glad she has found her way to Newcastle where she lives with her partner and Lars the whippet.
