Latest Government Guidance

The government have announced an easing of the restrictions on eye testing:

If you feel that your eyes have changed and you need to update your glasses prescription, we can now see you for an eye test.

We can also help if you’ve lost or damaged your glasses or sunglasses and need replacements.

Easing of restrictions

NHS England’s definition of ‘essential eyecare’ which can now be carried out:

“this includes but is not limited to appointments for patients who would not normally be considered to be emergencies, but where, in the practitioner’s professional judgement, a delay in an examination may be detrimental to a patient’s sight or wellbeing. This may include where patients have broken or lost their glasses or contact lenses and need a replacement pair to function.”

Examples include:

  • Patients who require an appointment due to clinical risk factors that are being monitored by the clinician.
  • Patients with a minor reduction in vision, and patients with broken spectacles that have been “making do” with older spectacles with an out-of-date prescription.
  • Patients who are anxious or concerned about their vision, in the absence of clear clinical indications.

Exclusive store access…

To ensure safety at this time we will be seeing one client at a time, so all visits to the store MUST be by appointment.

Whether you need an eye test and new glasses, just new glasses, or a simple repair, you will still need to make an appointment.

Please click https://www.greyst.co.uk/appointments/ or email hello@greyst.co.uk to arrange a visit.

Ten Years of GLCO

Ten years of Garrett Leight California Optical!

GREY ST. favourites Garrett Leight are ten years old! As one of the first UK stockists, it has been our pleasure to share the rise and rise of possibly the coolest eyewear brand of the decade! Let’s hear from the man himself, Garrett Leight, on GLCO’s 10th anniversary;

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been a little over ten years since I began dreaming up Garrett Leight California Optical.

Since the beginning, the frames and the people have been the heart of the operation. Visually and aesthetically, I was deeply inspired by this incredible archive of vintage frames I was collecting and selling, as well as the classic images I scoured the internet for. Through the inaugural opening of the Abbot Kinney location in 2009, I met so many incredible and inspirational Venice locals who have become my friends, family, and subsequently, a part of the GLCO history, DNA and aesthetic. I remember being obsessed with the vintage eyewear my customers would bring into the store and share with me daily, and drawing inspiration from American icons like Hunter S Thompson and Arthur Miller. It was serendipitously aligned with this whole vintage revival happening at the time that was likely a microcosm of the recession.

Ten Years

“My customers were seeking thin, acetate frames and timeless classic looks, like those worn by iconic American figures throughout numerous decades—styles that were inevitably hard to find. I began to design my first collection with this in mind. I remember sketching up the initial designs and my first trip to the factory to submit them. Receiving the first samples and having the perfect audience to test them on for fit and styling still stand as one of the most memorable moments in our history. In retrospect, it seems almost unfair and quite surreal to have had such a perfect setup. It was only natural to parlay that sentiment into the imagery of the brand.

For the years following the design of that first collection and still to this day, the experiences from the early days of the brand continue to be the inspiration for our designs and our brand. It is truly an authentic representation of the one-of-a-kind individuals in my community–what they wear, what they read, what they create, what inspires them and how that ultimately influences the world.

10th Anniversary

“For our ten year anniversary, I wanted to pay homage to this as it’s everything that our brand is today. The collection itself takes some of our best selling styles from our first collection and adds a subtle modern twist. The pages to follow are filled with those special and cherished individuals who have helped bring our designs to life over the past decade.

Besides the 10 year mark of starting this company, 2020 marks the most instrumental year in our existence, as it presents the opportunity to genuinely reflect on who we are and how we got here.”

Let’s have a Conversation!

Talk Talk

There has been a lot of talk about it. Serious discussions, heated conversation, and occasionally an admiring chat with some slight banter about it around the coffee machine. But now it’s here. Matali Crasset’s third eyewear family with THEO. She calls it Dialogues

Theo exchange

Ping Pong

You know how it works. You say something (funny of course). Your friend on the other side of the table picks up on it and adds their two cents. You ping, they pong. Each ping influences the next pong. Before you know it, you have a great conversation that challenges you with new points of view, that surprises you with different insights, and forces you to rethink who you are.

THEO

Dialogues

That is what Matali sat down for: an interesting dialogue between the two basic shapes in eyewear. One is the archetypal form for lenses, the second is an expansion she laid around it. She had both forms ping-pong and shape-shift and the result is an eyewear family that challenges you to change your individuality!

A little less conversation…

There was little discussion required when we sat down with THEO to view this amazing new collection.  We couldn’t wait to bring them back to the GREY ST. shelves!

A Re-Discovery of Futurism

The artistic and social movement of Futurism celebrated originality and rejected tradition.

The Futurists practiced in every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, graphic design, interior design, film, fashion, literature, music and architecture.

Dance Hall Scene c.1913-4 Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson

The movement of Futurism was founded in Milan in February 1909 by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

Controversial and multifaceted, Futurism represented Italy’s most significant contribution to European Modernism. The movement finally lost momentum with the death of Marinetti in 1944.

He seems like quite a guy!

Although the movement was short-lived, it went on to influence surrealism, expressionism and art deco.

Exactly 110 years later, Futurism was rediscovered. This time, in the form of Eyewear…

In February this year we traveled to the birthplace of Futurism for Mido Eyewear Show, Milan. It was here that we discovered The Futurist Collection by Anne et Valentin.

Over the past few years we’ve seen a shift back to more nostalgic frame styles. Traditional silhouettes, colours and materials have dominated the trends. Even the innovators have been influenced by the past.

Anne et Valentin are taking things in a whole new direction with their Futurist Collection. The frames are multidimensional. The colours are vivid. Striking contrasts and repeating laser patterns create deconstructed structure.

The Futurist Collection is made of three striking shapes: Neon, New Wave and Night Call. Each model is imaginative, exciting, and maybe a little excessive. The perfect addition to any eyewear enthustiast’s collection!

“If Giorgio Moroder were to put a ring on Kraftwerk’s finger in a virtual cathedral illuminated by the rays of a green sun seeping through the pixelated stained glass windows in a remake of Enter The Void in 2035, their children would be FUTURIST.” Anne et Valentin.

MYKITA Trunk Show

Thanks to all who attended our MYKITA Day Trunk Show. We had a blast!

MYKITA Day Trunk Show
