At Grey St. Optician we take our Eyewear collection seriously. To earn a place on our shelves, a frame has to not only look beautiful. It has to be expertly designed and crafted by people who care as much as we do.

So when we met Lazare Studio founder Alexandre Caton, we knew we needed to bring his exquisite collection to the people of Newcastle upon Tyne.

 


Classic Eyewear, Resurrected

Alexandre is himself an optician, and has over 20 years of experience in his own stores.

During his career, Alexandre became fascinated with the idea of resurrecting traditional methods and materials, but with the innovation of cutting-edge technologies. He wanted to create frames that took the best from both history and modernity, and in 2020 Lazare Studios was born.

The name of the brand is inspired by the story of Saint Lazarus, and refers to the restoration of life. In his words, Alexandre’s ethos is “to inherit the past and look for new ways to enhance it”

A look through the collection is a like a trip through time, as you spot signature styles of the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Each shape has a modern finesse that grounds them in the present.

Alexandre’s optical expertise can be seen in his attention to details. His frames do more than just look good. Each piece is designed with the end wearer in mind. “I draw a large number of frames every day, and when I think, “This could be an interesting design,” I balance the shapes over and over again. Then I make prototypes and try the frames on various people’s faces to achieve the balance that I think is best.”

Alexandre shares our sentiments that eyewear is an extension of the self. He has created frames with the knowledge that frames become a part of the wearer’s daily life.

 


The brand takes influence from Wabi Sabi, a Japanese philosophy rooted in appreciation for simplicity, craftsmanship and the beauty of aged imperfections. You can see this in their signature Wabi Sabi colourway; a delicate 10-micron blend of gold and silver that transforms over time, wear, and handling.
